I am doing my thesis on the use of graphene for supercapcitor electrodes. Most examples I have read about use nickel foam as a substrate for electrode production. I will most likely be looking at electrophoretically depositing graphene quantum dots onto an electrode substrate. I was wondering if anyone knew of a better substitute if this material was not available?
Choice of the current collector (substrate) material for a supercapacitor electrode mainly depends on the following factors:
1. The substrate material should be stable enough, even if it gets contact with the electrolyte.
2. The resistance of the CC should be as low as possible.
3. The contact resistance of the electrode-substrate interface has to be minimal.
You may try some carbon-based material with high electrochemical stability
1. Make sure, your electrolyte is compatible
2. Nickel is better only if the electrolyte is non-acidic

Cu is used as a current collector. However, there will be oxidation of copper, but as you see the results, they are not really off from EDLC behavior.
