Fluoride ion does not inhibit the human Sodium Iodide Symporter hNIS, thought to be a dimer of a 13 helix membrane protein. Perchlorate, TetraFluoroBorate, Aryl Trifluoroborate, perRhenate, perTechnetate and FluoroSulfate are all tetrahedral species that do inhibit and accumulate in the Symporter.
Exceptions include Thiocyanate and HexaFluoroPhosphate.
Could there be more than one critical active site in the structure?
