I'm planing to purify total RNA from bacteria, and I notice regular RNA extraction kit could only purify RNA > 200 nt. Do you have experience with miRNeasy (Qiagen) and mirVana (Ambion)? Which one will give better quality and less bias? Thank you very much for your suggestions!
I have extracted total RNA from cell lines using trizol and there I got mRNA and miRNA both in good quantity and quality. But I do not how it works for bacteria.
In my knowledge, miRNAeasy is for total RNA and mirVana is recommended for small RNA extraction.

i work with plants and i have used mirVana (Ambion). the kit works very well for small RNA extraction. i am positive that it would work well for bacteria as well.

Trizol is a good option as it recovers short and long RNA, from many sources, cheap. The protocol is pretty long though, and you cant process more than few samples at a time. So Ambions mirVana is a superior option in many cases, enabling recovery of the entire RNA population, down to really short ones 10-15 nt
