I found a possible answer in "overflow metabolism", where fast-growing cells use respiration and fermentation at the same time, possibly because they don't have enough enzymes to metabolize the substrate by respiration only. It remains unclear why this is more beneficial to the cell instead of making more enzymes for respiration. Research appears to be ongoing.
