Immediate rejection is possible by the editor of a journal but I dont think immediate acceptance is possible by him/her without any peer review. The editor rejects a manuscript based on the aim and scope of the journal by himself. But for acceptance he has to send it to atleast two reviewers to peer review the manuscript and can conclude then. This is the procedure for indexed journals.
I agree with the motion and would like to include that some times, journal editors did not bothered to reply the author whether your article has been received or not.
I witnessed this with one top journal (do not want to take the name), When I submitted the article and reminded the editor every after 15-20 days but no response. Finally I submitted it to somewhere else. You would surprise to know after 9 months I received the mail that they have received my article and reviewing it.
If a journal accepts a paper immediately then that sounds like a journal that I would not favor trying to publish in. Even if the author is someone famous mistakes can be made, and it must always be thoroughly checked, by more than one referee. One should not expect a very quick response either - manuscript may be very complicated to understand - even finding the right referees can take a long time!
I hope I am not upsetting anyone, but the promises that some journals are now making ("refereeing done within three weeks") is either a lie or absurd - if they actually mean it then it sounds unprofessional to me.
Thanks for expressing your view. Taking a decision soon does not mean that Journal will not take care of its procedure. They have to go the proper procedure but time limit will appropriate from author. Many Journals are not even respond on e-mail or the status of the paper. I mean within proper procedure time factor will be helpful to author.
Thanks for answer. We never say that acceptance will be made as per peer review of Journals procedure. We are discussing that whatever time required within that Journals should reply/updated the status. Many Journals are not responded or not followed the time. How long review process will go on? there should be time frame of it and it should be followed.
If the discussion is on fast response from a journal then it is highly appreciable one. Nowadays journals consumes time like anything to give a response. They take a minimum time period of 3- 4 months even some journals take 6 months and more. According to me for peer review by dedicated reviewers available with the journal editors may take a minimum time period of 1 month to get the response.
I agree that acceptance can not be fastened but the discussion say at-leat rejection should be fastened.
It is difficult to receive a rejection after 10-12 months, with comments that the paper is good but do not match with the theme and scope of journal. I think that this the key objective of this question.
If Journal's replied in time whether rejection or it is under process than also it will be good. I mean to say that process should be fast so that in case of not matching to Journal than author can send it in some suitable Journal.
