Aside from genetic predispositions, from a pathological mechanistic perspective, diabetes mellitus and AD can be accurately characterized as "anaerobic pathologies." So, a pathological synergistic effect is almost inevitable. Moreover, check the patient for the most likely herpetic culprits (specifically EBV, CMV, and the varicella zoster virus) as AD is known to have a contributory herpetic etiology (I've published on this). Therefore any anaerobic pathogenic duress can reduce the threshold for pathological severity.
