While evaluating articles for the academic promotion, there are some universities I know, which divide the total number of article by number of authors irrespective of quality of articles.
Does it means publishing with many co-authors degrades the quality of article?
It may be depends upon the quality of the article not on the co-author number. I think their is no direct relationship between co-authors and weight of article, its actually the quality of journal .If a paper is published in high quality journal, it has high scientific weight regardless number of co-authors, on the other hand ,if a paper is published in mid quality journal regardless it's quality ,the scientific weight may be decreased .

In my country,
The score of an article ( based on journal quality and indexing) divided to authors ( 70 percents of score belongs to first author and 30 percents to other authors). It's just inportant in faculty promotion.

I agree the answer of Hassan Alshamsi . As there is no relation between the number of co-authors and the quality of the article, it depends mainly on the quality of the journal (Impact Factor) or (SJR). Regards
This action usually happens in some countries. But i think this is not totally right as from ethics to add all those involved in the work as a coauthors. Their point of view is to prevent authors from adding their friend names without real contribution.
On the other hand, some universities focus on the first and corresponding author as they did the most job.
it is not necessary always some of scientific works are deserved the number of authors
The presence of multiple authors (whom they assume to be the reviewers) is evidence of peer review. Having more co-authors means more contributions in the paper regardless how big is their contributions. It is also considered as one of the important advantages to have a well written paper.

I will not tell stories , I have seen ridiculous # of authors , certain publications will limit them (say not more than 4 or 6) . So there you go , do not want to explicitly state why !!!!
Benefit of the doubt : Part of work or Labs or resources are shared ...
This is only in multi-disciplinary else no way ...
Will it degrade I don't think ultimately what matters is how and what we present ....
It should also be noted that added too many co-authors could affect how its been cited...

I want to add that the weight of the paper is also depending on the importance and the novelty of the topic as well as the ways to achieve the objectives planned in the project. New discoveries are so valuable when published regardless the number of authors or the name of the journal.
It varies from country to country. This is a bad practice that some researchers add the names of others, especially PhD supervisors and bosses to get unethical benefits from them even though if they have 0 (zero) contributions. These 0% contributing authors may use such papers for their promotions. To prevent these phenomenon, some countries especially where such unethical practice is very common, implements the scoring system.

Thank you so much for giving time to read my questions and for your valuable time for the contributions. Your views are very important. Generally in the social science research there may be few authors but in some lab based research we can see many co-authors due to the nature of research. But, faculty give equal weight-age on every article regardless where it is published. Further dividing the number allocated for one article diving by number of authors makes its weight very light. So, there should be a revision for such a system by concerned authorities if it exist.

In my opinion, number of authors should be proportional to the value of the paper, some papers reports the results of huge research project, other papers conduct comprehensive literature review or meta analysis, in such cases it is acceptable and even preferable to have multiple authors, as these projects require collaboration and team work, however, sometimes you find papers with very superficial content, with no deep discussion and analysis ...with high number of authors which reflects the lack of research ethics...
