I learned that Pim-1 kinase is a therapeutic target for many types of cancers. Can activation of Pim-1 kinase could support cardioprotection without tumorigenesis?
Article Rejuvenation of Human Cardiac Progenitor Cells With Pim-1 Kinase
Hello Khaja - The Pim-1 story originated in my laboratory. There are a few important points for you to know: 1) The heart is particularly resistant to oncogenic transformation, 2) Pim-1 itself is considered a very weak oncogenic protein, 3) Transgenic mice created with constitutive overexpression of Pim-1 in the heart have never shown any evidence of tumors or cardiac hypertrophy, and 4) studies in my lab carried out for a one year follow up did not show any evidence of tumorigenesis following injection of Pim-1 enhanced cardiac progenitor cells. For further information you will want to read the following reference: Siddiqi S, Sussman MA. Cell and gene therapy for severe heart failure patients: the time and place for Pim-1 kinase. Expert Rev Cardiovasc Ther. 2013 Aug;11(8):949-57. Review.
While you have an authentic reply from Dr. Sussman, you may also want to have a look at my paper below dealing with Pim-1 in the context of transformation.
