One is good for memory, but very private (not necessarily positive if someone else reads it, without express permission). Freestyle. No extensive vocabulary required. After one's passing, it can serve the future generations to get to know their predecessor.
Does it alleviate anxiety though? I do not know. I doubt it. But, then again, it does depend on the person and his/her personality (introvert, extrovert) or interests.
The other option would depend on one's inner world, mental attitude, writing skills, and exposure to interesting experiences (not necessarily negative) outside the ordinary. I should imagine that it would provide for a temporary distraction away from daily worries. :)

The notion that worrying by itself is a negative expression should be considered before any attempt to alleviate it. We need to consider why people worry, why it is deemed negative, and is it a modern development? If the latter, then it may express aspects of modern life.
In the past monks of all flavours spent years in contemplation. Is this related in some way to the energy expended in worry? I suggest it is related to creativity and that creative production will immediately lower its general intensity. Once this energy is used to draw, write, compose all will be put into perspective.
