I want to use a coupling reagent (possibly EDC/NHS) to link gold nanoparticles to primary amines and NOT primary amides. There are both primary amines and primary amides in my sample, but I want to selectively target only the primary amines. Would EDC/NHS coupling work for this purpose? If not, is there a different coupling reagent you could suggest? Thank you!

EDC/NHS won't work for amide couplings.

The EDC/NHS method won't trigger CO2H + amide couplings (at least under relatively mild reaction conditions) because amides are way less nucleophilic than amines. Check this chapter for example (http://www.newbooks-services.de/MediaFiles/Texts/6/9781607616696_Excerpt_001.pdf) where they refer to proteins and only report potential problems from lysine groups.
