There is currently no evidence that the Covid-19 vaccine is unsafe during pregnancy. But Public Health England and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) guidance on COVID-19 vaccination have both said that pregnant women should not routinely receive a COVID-19 vaccine until more information on safety is available.
The Australian health department is encouraging women who are pregnant and at high risk of catching COVID-19, or who have medical conditions that make them more vulnerable to severe COVID-19 disease, to consider getting vaccinated.
The World Health Organization is even clearer in recommending women who are pregnant to be vaccinated if they are at high risk of catching COVID-19 or of developing severe COVID-19 disease.
Pfizer and Biontech are now conducting a trial in pregnant women. The vaccine is now to be tested on around 4,000 expectant mothers. Another study with children is already being planned.
