I'm administering subanesthetic doses of ketamine to mice (10 mg/kg; i.p.), and I noticed that their motor coordination becomes compromised for up to an hour following injection. Has anyone experienced this with their mice or do I have to reconsider?
Yes, the effects of ketamine/xylazine injections can persist for quite some time in mice. If needed, the anesthesia can be reversed using atipamezole (Antisedan) to speed recovery.
Hello John! Thank you for your reply. The issue is that we're using what's supposed to be a subanesthetic dose of ketamine, so I'm assuming no anesthesia symptoms (uncoordinated gait, for example) should happen following the injection. I can't use atipamezole to rectify these symptoms as it might compromise the effects I'd like to see on a cortical level following in vivo ketamine treatment.

Subanesthetic doses of ketamine, meaning a dose that doesn't completely anesthetize the animal, can have complex effects on mouse behavioral profiles.
One study found that male mice exhibited increased exploration of the center area in an open field test, which might indicate reduced anxiety-like behavior. On the other hand, females showed a trend towards decreased immobility during a forced swim test, which is often interpreted as an antidepressant-like effect.
