Hi Eman El-Abd and Dongwei Goa thank you for your replies.
I am doing research entitled "Prevalence and Common Types of Cancer in Somalia".The aim is to estimate the common type of cancers from registered cases in year 2012- 2017 in Somalia.
At the end, the study will recommend preventive measures.
Any articles or assistance related to the prevalence and types of cancers is highly appreciated.
So many papers were published on cancer in EMRO region
Just to help you can read: the following two papers written by our group
1. Habib OS, Al-Hilfi RA. The feasibility of household survey on population risk assessment of cancer and to support cancer registration. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016; 17 (Supplement 3): 213-218.
2. Habib OS, Al-Diab JMA, Mohsin A, Elwe WM, Hassan JG, Al-Haroun SS, Al-Emara KAS. Experience and outcome of population-based cancer registration in Basrah-Southern Iraq in four years (2005-2008). Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2010;11: 51-54.
I will provide you with other titles if you still wish to
The most common cancer, as i have noticed during my data collection is Hepatocarcinoma secondary to Viral Hepatitis, any updates, articles and recommendations will be highly appreciated.
It depends on which country or region you talk about. In almost all countries with limited exceptions may be, breast cancer is the top one. So you need to make at l;east adequate regional review to see the pattern of cancer before/ or while you gather information. The pattern is also affected by whether you use registry-based, histopathology-based , hospital-based or household based sources of data. We have extensive experience in dealing with these sources and recognize the ;limitation of each. In addition to the two references which listed yesterday, you can search for published data on cancer registries in many Arab countries.
You need to be sure whether you are studying incidence or prevalence of cancer. Just to clarify:
If you you look at existing cases regardless of the date of onset, this is a prevalence study. However if you search for newly diagnosed cases during a specific time period, this is an incidence study. If you use any sort of registry, make sure which type of cases they register and whether they specify the year of diagnosis or not
Here is my Abstract of my article "Prevalence of Cancer among cancer patients diagnosed at Kamil diagnostic center, Mogadishu- Somalia"
kindly review and comment
the limitations here is that there is no register for cancer data, even the secondary data which i am referring to is not included all the necessary information related to cancer patients like the residence, incidence data as well as other treatment performed.
so this is only first step to shed light on the increasing prevalence of cancer in somalia.
any suggestion for future studies as well as collaboration work is highly appreciated
