You can record the contraction rate by microscopic analysis. Simply put the cells under microscope and observe for the number of beats per minute.

Alternatively, you can measure action potential through patch-clamp measurements.

MEA and patch clamp is the profound way to study contraction. In a simple way, Microscopic video recording could also be helpful. However, if its in cluster form like ESCs differentiated cardiomyocyes then video capture will come good. Capturing fibroblast (flat cells) contraction may be challenging.
