Experience with wet-mechanical treatment processes such as soil washing of high mercury waste (up to a range of about 1000 mg/kg) has shown that attrition of the sand fraction is not efficient all the time and even treatment plants were designed wrongly in the past because of such little details.
Anybody able to share his experience in this field with me?

I dont know if I will be able to help - however, had you collected some data on the biotic components of the polluted soil ? the changes in the different components, trophic relation etc could be detected.

Thank you for your answer. Biotic components such as bacteria are able to transfer metallic mercury into organo-mercury compounds, which are highly soluble and therefore subject of migration. So there is definitely an impact.
Commonly water-soluble mercury compounds are already attached to the fines (silt and clay) anyway and they don't require an additional mechanical process to force the shifting such as attrition.
