Hi Chris, Yes. They have been plug checked daily. I am working with many different lines of mice that deliver between 19-21 days post-plug. Hoping for an indicator so I know when to take the pups for rederivations. Thanks!
I ask a previous Manager of mine and her reply was:
"You can feel if the vagina has started to open but this is generally at or very close to giving birth. If you put your thumb over the vagina on a normal mouse it feels pretty close together, on a mouse giving birth it has a wider opening."
I'm not sure if that helps.
I will ask for advice on the ANZLAA mailing list if you like.
Hey Chris, yes, please do ask. Thank you for this answer but I really need to know about 18-24 hours in advance. Immediately prior won't help our purposes. Thanks again for your help!
I'm not sure why I didn't remember this but in the past we have injected mice with progesterone to ensure the female didn't litter to soon.
A previous coworker will send me a protocol for injecting progesterone mixed with sterile peanut oil from 2 days before the due date, including concentrations and how to inject. I have to check that it is peanut oil since I have not done it in a while.
You would need to work out the expected due dates for each strain and inject the 2 days before they are due.
If a strain litters consistently on day 19, you would inject the progesterone subcutaneously into the scruff on day 17 and 18 then carry out the cesarean on day 19.
Unless you are watching the mice constantly it would be hard to tell if they are a few days off littering, plus you would want to keep any disturbance to a minimum to avoid the mother getting stressed.
I am trying to locate protocols and purchasing information for the progesterone/peanut oil injections too and having trouble finding resources. Would either of you be able to pass those on to me as well.
