I'm currently building up some ideas for a project and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Zootoca vivipara (or other Lacertids) becoming desensitized to shadow passing over the visual field?
Based on what I have seen in other reptile species, I do not think they will become totally desensitised to shadows. I have 'played' this game with several unrelated species, and what I have found is that flight distance becomes shorter with increased exposure to shadows, and also that some (but not all) individuals display increased tolerance to shadows and shadow duration, but will always flee at some point. Presumably if there were consequences to these actions, things would be different. Hope this gives you some ideas!
Thanks, indeed this is useful, and agrees for the majority of sites I've encountered lizards at; I read a study in the US of fence lizards flight response to being covered by shadow however have observed, in juveniles, some habituation to shadow coverage at one site; certainly something I wish to look in to more thoroughly!
