The Sundarbans is formed by a cluster of islands linked to the mainland by waterways. To get around, one must rely on boats. Several villages in these islands are home to women whose husbands have been killed by tigers. ‘Tiger Widows’ they are called. But I have also witnessed another side of the coin in this visit. Many women are engaged with the fish drying occupation with their husbands. After getting fishes (mainly trash varieties) off the inshore region, the women sort them and dry them, which are taken by the fish feed manufacturers for making fish feed. This is a blue supply chain, which is a matter of concern as overexploitation may initiate another dark chapter of SUSTAINABILITY
Abhijit Mitra I think that "SUSTAINABILITY" in some pockets of the Earth is under Threat, That is true. If the continuous garbage fish is then caught and used as fish food, over time the fish will become less species. other than that, the tiger widow makes the search for fish every day as the main ingredient for her life. so that fish species will decrease. there needs to be direction from the local government to train widows around the coast regarding other skills training such as weaving or training skills as fishermen around but still preserving fish fish that should be able to live. even though many of the fish have no benefit but by letting them live, they have maintained the survival of the environment and especially certain fish species. thank you.
The question of the sustainability needs to be linked with livelihood, in this case the women engaged in fish drying. The question remains about the feed producers, how many tones are extracted by them directly? How many women are engaged and what's sustainable solution for their livelihood? The fish waste might have their own ecological importance, whether the resource is scarce or abundance. They must be economically linked to sustain their occupation, cooperatives, monitoring and social change needed. Thanks Abhijit Mitra sir for educating us.
Yes, I think of it that the sustainability will be under threat if no manageable preservation method will not be made.
