Academics tend to publish their works in journals and conference papers. However to gain reach and maximum ‘academic impact’ outside the academic community you can actually self-publish your academic works.

Self-publishing is an alternative to costly and time-consuming publications in journals and with publishers. However, the quality of such publications is often very low. As a scientist with an interest in the history of science, I also have concerns about the long-term availability of such publications. They are usually not available in libraries, and online availability is usually tied to the life of the author.
The goals of publishing are to prove the value of and popularize an academic work. Thus, if peer review could be automated then self publishing would have almost the same value as conventional academic publishing. My case:

By self-publishing i do not mean getting published in a publication that is outside academia. I mean you are the author and you self-publish your work on your own web site as an example.
