Do you recommend using HPLC analysis of Algae Bio-Oil from Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL)? If yes, which columns and methods?
We want to identify mainly the hydrocarbon content, some phenols and N content compounds from the bio-oil fraction.

GC-MS would be preferred over HPLC any day for oil analysis. Use FAME polyethylene glycol column, 30meter or 100 meter with temperature rampings starting from 50*C to 225* with 3*C increase per minute. Basically HTL will give u good pure yields of oil fractions, 12C, 14C, 16C, 18C, and so on.
Phenolic groups can be detected but not on FAME column. RTX5 should do the job for that using GC-MS.
For HPLC you need a standard and also need to know the absorption maxima for the compounds.
Nitrogen content will be best estimated using Kjehdahl apparatus.

I agree with Yash. For analysing hydrocarbons (aliphatics, I suppose), GC/MS is usually the option selected by researchers.
Also for phenols.
