Do you know inorganic substances with refractive index > 4.5 ?
OR - what is the maximum refractive index of ANY chemical substance you know ? ( Ge has refractive index 4.0-4.07 - the highest I could find ).
By using FTIR-ATR-method (IRE - diamond n=2.4) in order to study the reaction between two simple substances dissolved in water - we observed several peaks with negative absorbance - substantially intensifying in the course of reaction. [The strongest among negative peaks lies at 1740 cm-1 the frequency typical for esters, BUT - there are no groups in the reaction mixture which can form any type of carbonyl groups]
