Good question. Not much work has been done in this space. A potential area for serious research.
superabsorbent polymers should not be used in agriculture, because of:
- the risk of transfer of radicals into the food chain,
- the risk of accumulation of a xenobiotic compound in the soil matrix,
- under drought an salt conditions they increase stress on plants, because their "water storing" feature is in fact a water competition for the plants.

yes Ewald sir, it is not using practically under field condition because it is more costly as well as less viable
