I am working on a dissertation proposal which requires a large sample size of DRD4 genotyped subjects to compete surveys on religious experience throughout life- since I have to take cost into account, a pre-existing database (even if technically unavailable to someone in my position) would streamline the study proposal.
Consult the Human Subject Committee at your University. what you desire would seem to contradict ethical guidelines. D. Booth
Agree with David Eugene Booth that this will require the involvement of your Institutional Review Board and the IRB of the institution from which you are receiving the data.
Prior studies may have asked participants to store their samples and genotype information for future research in genobanking efforts. The way genobanks worked at my institution, it would require: an IRB approved protocol, reconsent of every patient to your novel research question, waivers for deceased subjects and those for whom you could not find up-to-date contact information and reconsent, and study procedures to complete your instrument, a data transfer agreement between the two institutions, statements regarding the protection of the subjects, HIPAA, and why the additional contact would be necessary for your research purposes. Geneallly, reconsenting patients in a study of even modest size can quickly become a months long process.
This requires coordination with the original investigator, their IRB if they aren't at your institution, and your IRB, not to mention legal review of the data transfer agreement. It would be significantly easier if you found such a genobank in your own institution and save likely months of effort.
I have found a viable database- the MAVAN (maternal adversity, vulnerability, and neurodevelopment) project, hosted by the Douglas Mental Health University Institute at McGill University.
