Dear all. I need to know if the picture showed represent some sort of contamination or just floculation of any components? It corresponds to DMEM Media + 1.5 g/L Sodium Bicarbonate + 10 mL Sodium Piruvate + 10 mL Antibiotic. Thank you all.
It is very hard to define if this is flocculation or some sort of contamination but there are something sure: DMEM or any other medium after filtration is absolutely clear. Particles or insoluble material can not be present in this preparation. So I suggest you prepare the medium again taking all cares.
Hello Ivan. Looks like bubbles to me. For cell culture purposes, maybe you should not shake/mix too harshly and avoid the formation of bubbles, because bubbles can trap contaminants - thus exposing your cells to contamination.
In addition, if you want to be really cautious, you can take 100ul of that medium in the picture and add to a sterile tube containing 1ml of nutrient broth (or any bacteriological growth medium that you have), and incubate it at 37'C - see any turbidity at 4-6hr or overnight (you can Gram-stained this to view microscopically). If still remains clear, then your media is sterile and okay to use.
