This introgression was confirmed to exist by French scientists, who unfortunately did not publish. It was an exchange of a piece of coding DNA. The exchange of DNA happened in this case despite LACK OF PAIRING AT MEIOSIS. thus the theoretical impossibility. Therefore I think that the theory is wrong and that the real possibilities of alien introgressions are vastly underestimated. Exchanges must also occur before or after the time of meiosis where recombinations are known to happen. I lack the ability to retrieve this publication, being on my own now, without easy access to literature search. But Gurdev Kush was one of the authors.

I think that alien introgressions are possible aut of meiosis. At interphase, probably.

This was a very serious topic of debate when I was involved in alien crosses. I was certain that absence of pairing was not a totally negative verdict about potential progress.
By the way you should see the weird looking asynchronous meiosis of wheat in wheat x Leymus species (Ph D Thesis of my grad student Dr Ariane Plourde, Laval University; thesis in French).
I know how to bring those hybrids back to fertility and wheat-like progenies, but it is not that easy. I think I found out how Tsitsin (Cziczin) probably did it. That scientist gave very few details; backcrosses are amazingly difficult unless you use repeated treatments of colchicine after repeated cloning. Callusing young inflorescences for plant regeneration can also help (colchicine plantlets after). This leads to chromosome elimination but desirable introgressions can happen.
