Preferred growth of nanoparticles depends on the substrate, the material you are depositing, the deposition method etc.

They can be characterized by many techniques (e.g. XRD, TEM etc).

These are lots of defects in nanomaterials including porosity, agglomeration, stress concentration which contributes to reduce mechanical properties of that specimens. Also, TEM, SEM, and XRD are the ways that we could find the suitable dispersion of the nano particles.
Another significant fact that should be taken into consideration is that all of the methods mentioned above are belong to specific nanoparticles. for example, you cannot use XRD for spherical nano-silica to find its dispersion.
All in all, consider your application, select your nano particle, try to reach homogeneous dispersion and try to avoid defects.
