I am working on an Austenitic stainless steel, that undergoes creep in service. In order to model the damage progression, I would like to measure the carbide coarsening and corrborate the size of the carbides with a diffusion equation, which will require the diffusivities of Cr in Austenite, C in Austenite etc.
Is there a database someone can refer me to?
Also, Can anyone help me by telling me what is the best way to measure the size of carbides and grains in an austenitic stainless steel. My efforts with Optical Microscopy and etchants have not helped me much.
Hi, I'm not sure how much budget you have, but there are commercial databases available. One is from Thermocalc (http://www.thermocalc.com/MOBDATA.htm) and another database is from Pandat (http://www.computherm.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_84). Hopefully one (or both) of the databases meet your needs.

Sai, probably the optical microscope is enough for grain size, in general you can perform a more detailed analysis using a combination of backscattered SEM images and image analysis for particles(carbides), but depends of the size of these carbides.
And for grain size,in case of austenitic stainless steels, EBSD could be the option for detailed information.

For data base refer smithells metal ref handbook. You get a diffusivity data with temperature range and also for measuring carbide size and grain size i guess optical micrograph or SEM with IMAGE J software would do it .
