the reason why we fail to cherish colonial culture especially here in Africa is that we have been brain washed by the Fanonian generation to disavow the positivity of colonization. we are paying the price of misrecognizing the true path to modernity
Yes but some of us prefer post mdoernity which might just point the way forward. There is a lot wrong with the Western way of life even if most Africans would love to have such problems. High rates of depression, eating disorders, loneliness and isolation etc. The rich 1% getr icher and everyoen else gets poorer.
Colonial culture in any country or setting cannot be vieded in isolation as one thing. It is more of a time period than can have a span from early to modern or even future dates when colonialism happens. My suggestion is to look at the subcultures within any society and identify specifically the variations in culture within a cultural period. One cannot cherish the whole apple when only offered a bite.
The bite offered was enough to stimulate forward-looking cultures into taking measures to quit their maladaptive traditions in order to embrace the more progress-prone ways of the colonizer. only those who masochistically refused to see any thing good about the colonial touch have become the ever whining losers. colonialism remains providence's greatest accelerator of historical and cultural change. History show that those who refuse to see it in that light reamain stuck in underdevelopment
I distinguish between local culture and superimposed cultures. Over time external influences are unavoidable, and depending upon their impact on part or whole of the local community the local culture may react / absorb / reject some extraneous elements. Colonial culture is such a superimposed culture that could partly take roots, but also rejected by some components of the local culture. My own native land Goa has faced and continues to face this challenge. Despite the colonial policies and religious imposition, the native language has resisted and is today the official State language. However, several western influences introduced by the Portuguese are cherished as giving Goa some uniqueness and tourist attraction.
