Personally I found online classes to be ineffective especially for classes that involve lab work.

I did several trainings for the organizations through online. The difficulties I faced are

1. very difficult to interact

2. for a very long training you might not aware how the attention of the participants

3. team workshop which is done in breakout room seemed to be difficult to match the effectiveness of offline team workshop

4. to evaluate presentation skill is tough

Of course there lies real differences between virtual training and real-life training. This is particularly applicable for students as it is quite difficult for them to grab the concept just by visualizing it rather than hands-on experience.

I have attended quite a number of online trainings. Some of those were effective and some not much. I did some analysis on that and found the trainings which require collaboration, exchange views and interactions among the participants are likely to be less effective in online mode. The training which are niche and required self practice, more focus on hands on are effective in online mode. This is my personal feeling and it can vary from individual to individual.

It could be a temporary alternative for now! However, it will not be as affective as the traditional training especially when it comes to practical skills training.
