Hi everyone, I might be approaching the field of socio-ecological systems to write the final paper of my PhD. I would like to get an idea of a super MUST-READ literature to get an overview of the approach and ideally a couple of case studies.
To narrow down the search, I am a political and social scientist (somewhere in between ;) ) and I study bioenergy development from a triple bottom line perspective (socio, economic and environmental sustainability). I have been using qualitative system dynamics (i.e. causal mapping) and systems thinking in my previous papers and I am now into the CAS literature. I have been advised to look into socio-ecological systems as a good example of CAS and quite related to my theoretical and methodological framework.

Tainter, Joseph, The Collapse of Complex Societies (Cambridge University Press, 1988)
The book offers numerous case studies. You might compare his case study of the collapse of the Roman Empire with Thomas Homer-Dixon's treatment of the same subject--in a rigorous but general-audience way--in The Upside of Down. Both analyses turn on the concept of Energy Return on Energy Invested; Tainter adds the concept of diminishing marginal returns for complexity (and note that complexity in systems is maintained by energy throughput, and can be increased only by increasing energy throughput--both of which become increasingly difficult when the EROI of the system's energy-harvesting subsystem is falling).
Charles Hall is the man to read on EROI. See "What is the minimum EROI a sustainable civilization must have?", among others.
