We are using Silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles with Amino surface groups for separation of a blood peptide in a test tube experiment. We have concerns about whether amino groups would spontaneously dissociate from the surface and become free in the solution, and whether potentially dissociated groups would affect detection of ammonia in the sample.
I would appreciate some insight into this matter.

Your question is dependent on the coating of the particles (procedure). If you have a nice SiO2 layer or a crosslinked siloxane after a cleaning procedure the SiC...NH2 is very stable. Effect of procedure is even monitored on silicon wafers.
