I'm zoologist, but I would acknowledge very much if someone could supply me examples of known (references) complex species in plants, algae or fungi. Thanks a lot.
Juan Lucas Cervera Look at work of Fourie, Gerda, et al. "Current status of the taxonomic position of Fusarium oxysporum formae specialis cubense within the Fusarium oxysporum complex." Infection, Genetics and Evolution 11.3 (2011): 533-542.
From the Abstract:
"Fusarium oxysporum is an asexual fungal species that includes human and animal pathogens and a diverse range of nonpathogens. Pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains of this species can be distinguished from each other with pathogenicity tests, but not with morphological analysis or sexual compatibility studies. Substantial genetic diversity among isolates has led to the realization that F. oxysporum represents a complex of cryptic species."
There are many species complexes in plant pathogenic bacteria (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Pseudomonas syringae, Ralstonia solanacearum, etc.) and in several plant pathogenic fungi. It looks like the members of such species complex can be poorly distinguished by traditional tests of microbiology / mycology, but have clear difference in virulence.
Hi Lucas, well there are some examples in marine gastropods: for example Dendropoma petraeum specie scomplex (now splitted at least in three species, one of them endemc to the Alboran Sea....), jCrepipatella dilatata species complex think also in Spurilla neapolitana is a species complex. Best regards
