I have been trying to evaporate cobalt using an e-beam evaporator. My issue is finding a decent material for the crucible liner. I have tried graphite, aluminum oxide, and copper. Graphite and aluminum oxide tend to crack, and copper melted drastically when the electron beam hit the side of the crucible. I have yet to try tungsten, but I wanted to see if anyone here has a suggestion.
Dear Monty Minnis this is a very interesting technical question. According to the link cited below, only alumina crucibles are suggested for evaporating cobalt using an e-beam evaporator. Perhaps you need to play a bit with the crucible characteristics such as wall diameter etc.

For reasons I don't know tungsten crucibles are not recommended for cobalt evaporation. Perhaps they will form an alloy?

I do not no what device you are using for vaporization. There is an instrument known as metal atom synthesizer or metal atom vaporizer which was used by MLH Green, Klabunde and others to make a variety of organometallic compounds including arene complexes using cocondensation of metal and ligand vapours at liquid nitrogen temperature. Still such machines are made in Toronto. They use metal ingot and an ebeam is focused at its mid point placed on a tungsten surface but high energy electrons hit only the target metal and nothing else. In your case also, if you focus on a metal ingot of bigger diameter so that there is no damage to the container. I do not know whether it is that easy to focus only on cobalt block during vaporization process.
