Activities at the start of the lesson deserve more attention than they usually receive. In fact, the initial activities that start the class are very important , as
1-Warm Ups get students to begin thinking and focusing on new lesson.
2-Warm Ups provide a transition into the topic. An activity at the start of the lesson activates pre-existing knowledge on a subject.
3-Warm Ups allow the teacher important opportunities to assess character and ability.

There should be a myriad of warm up activities for the purpose you mention.
My preferred warm up activities are the following two
(1) To ask students to mention the main points addresed in the previous lecture.
(2) To ask them if they would like me to elaborate a bit more on some of these points. and why.

Warm up activities remain the inspiration for the students which may help them to carry out their study program in a very comfortable manner .With this initially while preparation for the lecture & imparting training & study to the student lecturer should initially start with warm environment which may keep the students in the smiling manner to keep their basic end of their studies.
It is the responsibility of lecturer before imparting training to student , lecturer must create a pleasurable ,interesting environment with the importance training of their study program .

It is alleged that the famous psychologist Jean Piaget never ended the last sentence when he was writing his acclaimed books and papers. According to Piaget, he always left the last (not the final) sentence incomplele beacuse while completing it on another occasion, other ideas came easily to his mind. This procedure can be considered as a warm-up activity in scientific writing.
I wonder to what extent this procedure could be transferred to the beginning of our lectures. This would mean that our previous lecture had ended with, for exemple, an idea, fact, phenomenon, and the lile only partly described or explained. The rest of such a description/explanation would be reserved for the beginning of the next lecture.
Of course, to create, say, a warm and pleasurable environment at the start of our lectures is judged to be e recommended warm-up activity.

I always bullet the GAINS of every lecture or lesson and present to my students. Therefore, as a warm up, we all read out the benefits the students stand to gain from the lecture. I sometimes personalize these benefits and make them student-specific. This warm up cushions my students to be actively involved in the teaching and learning processes of my lectures. Thanks

As a warm-up, I usually do a bit of improvised stand-up comedy. This has a way of waking the mind. It helps my students and myself. Then I will review the previous lesson.

In order to find out what your students know about a topic before you begin a new lesson you can divide them into teams of four and present the topic. Then you can ask them to brainstorm and list as many ideas or questions as they can come up with in a specific time frame. Importantly, the students are not allowed to talk. Each student must write his or her ideas on the board or paper you’ve provided.

Your question is very interesting ! There is no set rule for warming up the student as it depends on the teacher and the class. Depending on the capability and teaching style of teacher, the warm up activities will vary as per the level of students of the class (undergraduate/Graduate/post-graduate) and subject taught.
I can suggest one example from my own experience which I found very effective to warm up and get the class attentive to the teaching. I normally follow an interactive method in the class where I ask the students to suggest individually what they think (what comes to their mind) of the 'Key-words related to the title/topic of the lecture' and write it in the board'. Prior to this I encourage and ask the students to participate and discuss freely, as no answer is wrong and no body should criticize other as these are individual thinking/opinion. In this process the whole class gets involved (as everyone mentally remains alert to answer the teacher and speak on the keywords, beside no one knows who is next to be asked) and after couple of minutes the students cover most of the aspects of the key words. So, after this warming up excercise, when the teacher teaches the topic the students are able to understand it better !!

Firstly, I have to warm up myself as a lecturer especially at the morning first lecture in the weekly lectures schedule and in a very cold day!
Really, I am starting with myself by preparing and reading my lecture and the second phase is relating to my students.

I usual begining lecturer with tell a daily event tha associated to the matterial of the lesson.
I think I answered the same question, or I'm not using the site correctly. But I'll repeat my answer anyway.
I do 5 minutes of stand-up improvised comedy. Sometimes funny, sometimes falls further than flat. Either way laughter clears the mind, and for your late afternoon classes, it wakes the students up. You can use any experience from your life, you can make up an outrageous scenario, just have fun and learn to laugh at yourself. Obviously there are many PC rules to avoid poking fun at, but very tempting.
The subject is environment. The first five minutes in every class are reserved for the students themselves, as an answer to the question what are the latest environmental news. Students expose their news monitoring results as quick titles. Many times some of the subjects they proposed were so important for that moment that the whole session will be devoted to disussing the problems and possible solutions under various environmental angles and views. This is also a way that other students and I my self learn from some of their subjects, informations or styles of presenting those subjects. This also gives the whole matter a component of a rather dynamic unexpected nature. Enriches the environmental culture to all and permites to some students who come to class incidently late to join smoothly without dramatization or too much guilt.

One of my most efficient warm-up activities is to set up a competition among the students with respect to who can best offer a recap of specific areas of previous contacts' lessons. I make sure I provide a noticeable verbal but embroidered reward on each contribution; that is the magic, every student wants to be given recognition or recommendation among their peers. I bet you, my students have come to know my pattern , and do not only listen to grab the message during class, but more importantly they go over previous lessons to be able to impress keep their positive faces in class.

The initialization process is not a simple process, but it requires skill in starting to attract students to a new topic in the class. Hence the challenge that requires the teacher to change and diversify methods to achieve the goal.
It depends on the topic that is supposed to be elaborated and also on the teaching subject. Worming up discussion should be proper introduction to the lesson.

There are numerous points related to your warm up activity for teaching sessions:-
Well it depends on the :-
1. Whether subject is pure theoretical or analytical
2. Maturity of the students
3. Time zone in which you are teaching (i.e. in the morning, afternoon or last lecture in the evening!!)
4. Teaching and engaging skill of the faculty.
Case:-
1. If your subject is purely theory then utmost care should be taken by the faculty not to act as sleeping pill to the students through the monotonous tone continuously.
Warm up - Discuss a practical interactive case study
Assign students to prepare a case study
Change tone pitch, throw questions to the idly sitting students.
For purely analytical then its a cake walk to faculty no need of warm up session. As the question itself are brainteasing.
Warm up - Ask students to come ahead of the class and solve on the blackboard.
2. If students are matured enough then, obviously they will get engage.
In case of less mature, create awareness. It will definitely help them.
3. Time Zone:-
Its challenging when you are teaching in the afternoon and evening.
Warm up- Ask them to change their sitting locations.
In this time zone role of the teacher should be entertainer first and faculty second. Cracking some jokes will cheer them up, but you need to maintain a thin line of difference between entertainer and faculty.
4. If the faculty is prepared enough then he/she will definitely engage the students meticulously by one way or the other.
Putting lab practicals at the end of the day will sort out this question.
As lab practicals are more of Experential Learning, where students are utilising all the natural senses.

Split the class into two (or three, or four, go wild!) teams and designate spots on the blackboard for each team to write on. Write the numbers one to five in a list in each team’s section. Then write a topic at the top of the blackboard. The topic can be anything, but be sure to make it general enough that there could be many options to choose from, like music genres, countries, school subjects, or whatever you’ve been teaching them recently.
Choose a student from each team to come to the blackboard and act as “writers”. Place spoons equal to the number of teams minus one within a fairly equal distance from each writer. When you say “GO”, the writers must write five things related to the topic on the board as fast as they can. Encourage the teams to shout answers to their writers if they’re not already in a frenzied, English-speaking state.
When the writers are finished they must grab a spoon. Count the number of correct answers for each team, awarding points for each one. The team who didn’t grab a spoon does not have their points counted. Play three or four rounds, alternating writers. Students have a great time and they’re shouting in English for most of the warm up!
