XRF technique quantifies the elements in a sample. You can use this if you suspect any particular element is linked to the origin or progress of a cancer. For example, suppose you think that Silicon breast implant can cause breast cancer, you can get samples from Primary tumour of Breast cancer patients and see if their silicon content is higher than that of other breast cancers/normal breast tissue. Another is to see if iron is linked to rapid growth of cancers.
Therefore what I suggest you do is to identify the common cancers in your place (so that material is available), develop a hypothesis on any link to any element, and then go ahead. Calcium, commonly used along with tobacco chewing, may be tested in oral cancers
XRF is applied in anti-cancer research to study the two dimensional distribution and concentration of metals and other biologically important elements, like phosphorus or sulfur, in cell or tissue samples. Thus, the direct assignment of the metal distribution to specific biological functions and targets is possible, e.g. DNA binding or accumulation in membrane regions. To quantify the elements in the tissue or cells the collected spectra and peak intensities must be calibrated against a standard of known composition and concentrations of the elements in question
The question is, does the presence of these element indicate that this tissue is a cancer? I think till now it is not possible. May we use these analysis to indicate the reasons for the cancer. Best wishes
Answering your question, XRF also measures the two dimensional distribution and concentration of metals and other biologically important elements. For example, XRF is used to measure the concentration of Gold nanoparticles from its spectral analysis. Numerous studies have shown of how to measure this concentration. Those gold nanoparticles can also be coated with a specific type of proteins that can only target/infuse the cancerous cells. From the diagnostic point, measuring the gold concentration will give the information of the cancerous tumors. GNP are also theraputic agents to target some cancer tumors. There are variety of studies that have done that.
