Intracellular pathogens are able to survive inside macrophage where pH reached up to 2 inside phagolysosome. Is this fine if we can put these pathogens that have developed mechanism to survive in such extreme conditions in the group of extremophiles?
....but there are multiple ways this is achieved and in not all cases would a pathogen containing phagosome be at pH2. Equally, enteric pathogens have to survive passage through the stomach at pH2. One could suggest in both cases this is primarily a survival state rather than growth state so perhaps the term extremophile is not appropriate.
Thanks Prof Wigley for your comment. I agree with you, can these pathogens be called as extremotolerant as these are successfully able to tolerate extreme stress? Do these pathogens have proteins similar to proteins of acidophiles that help in their survival?
if these pathogens are able to growth in pH 2 but optimum growth rate is a normal pH these are extremotolerant
