FVIII is a coagulation factor. Its main role is in amplifying thrombin generation and fibrin formation. It has obviously no direct role in primary hemostasis except that thrombin is a very potent platelet activator.
VWF is an adhesive protein with several functions. It is a carrier protein for FVIII and protects FVIII against premature proteolysis.
Independent from this function, VWF is essential in primary hemostasis.VWF is an essential component that links platelets to collagen exposed at the site of a vessel wall injury (platelet adhesion) and is also involved in platelet aggregation. The function of VWF is very much dependent on its multimer structure.
So the two proteins have quite different roles, but are of course both extremely important. Deficiencies lead to bleeding while elevated concentrations are linked to thrombosis.
