Here I am referring to political problems.
World over we are seeing an escalated level of violence to resolve problems.
Do you believe violence can resolve problems?
What is/can be the way out of this vicious cycles of violence.
Morally, this claim does not apply. Therefore, it is obvious that the world today is not very moral.
Violence leads to more violence, but does not resolve the problem.
The way we react is closely related with our living conditions. Therefore, the 'easiest' path we choose to follow may involve violent behavior. If there was justice all around the world, I believe there would not be such phenomena. But the above is an Utopian claim
Certainly not. Violence is in itself a problem. A 'problem' and 'more problems' cannot resolve problems.
Yes violence is a problem but we need to devise a way to find a solution to pressing problems. Violence is destroying the social and political structures.
Can violence and more violence resolve problems?
Violence only compel compliance through fear but NOT really convince the other party to accept wholeheartedly. Normally a violent act will be compensated with opposite violent act and go deeper and deeper into a vicious cycle indefinitely. Violence will not resolve the root cause of a problem but only address the symptom / surface of the problem.
What is/can be the way out of this vicious cycles of violence?
To break-out from the vicious cycles of violence, both / multiple parties need to conduct multi-lateral dialogues & reached a win-win decision. This might take times, patience, perseverance, tolerance & respects from all parties.
Violence is not a civilized way to solve problems. It complicates the issue and makes things worst.
The man has characteristics of both - herbivores and carnivores - genetically. It is human tendency to snatch foods from another (more or less) and to dominate over other physically or ideologically.
If common people do not support extremists, the incidents of violence can be minimised.
Finally violence is not an answer to violence. Governments should penalize and punish extremists and violent individuals.
It will be the same like dealing Terrorism with Counter Terrorism!!
If you are referring to the Political incidents (of today's India) , It will be better if we term it as "Aggression" rather than violence! Violence is the deliberate attempt to cause harm... but most political incidents, (when a group of public acts rebellious or exhibits actions which differs from the ruling party's ideology) the political party which is in power tries to send a message across.."How Dare You!" to show its dominance...rather than inflicting the real harm..
regards
Rathish
Examples of political violence could be If we see British history, the religious persecutions (during the time of Henry VIII, Mary I, Elizabeth I) and the ethnic cleansing (Germany, Poland e.t.c) Spanish Inquisition, Post Independent Riots in India & Pakistan e.t.c could be termed as violent events which had political backgrounds. The the reformation era of Europe will give you accounts of unspeakable cruelties inflicted on the public for not confirming to the ideologies of the ruling class.
Sometimes, there is no other way: for instance, should the police try to kill a terrorist who is shooting people down with a machine gun (e.g. at a school, a market...)? In this case, it's not wise to "turn the other cheek" and let the terrorist continue shooting. So, violence can be used to stop even more violence.
In the Old Testament, God said, "A tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye". While pacifists and reformists like Jesus Christ and Mahatma Gandhi would not advice violence, I think, violence is the nature of the Earth, where humans are a part of. I also recall the geologic theory that violence forms and reforms the rocks and the solid earth..
@Tiia, that will be an attack of self defense (if done by the person/group being attacked) and if done by the law enforcement then they are doing Job! Which are the only option available at has as dear Tiia points out! I agree
By Counter terrorism or violence what I meant was.. if for example X nation is supporting and breeding terrorism to inflict violence against nation Y, then as a strategy if Y nation resorts to do the same against X..then ? both sides innocent people die because of such stupidity
Is why quoted examples from the past! Since time immemorial the ruling class got a compulsive urge to show it as the sole legitimate belief / ideology (whic is deeply rooted in the minds of the ruling class of having a group with a different opinion, which might ultimately result in their loss of power)!..is why the catholics were killed in Britain and protestants were killed in Europe!
We can't solve our problems with violence, it will complicate the situation of our lives.
For sure , violence no sure shot effective means of solving any issue , but since it has to be brought in public eye in a shortest possible time , probably , that could be the option to vouch for such destructive method of resolving any problem. In the process , many anti-social elements waiting for such opportunity , get the ideal time to take advantage of such fluid situation to add fuel to the fire , eventually problem gaets more aggravated than solved.
Dear Yibha,
I think at first you have to make a difference between violence in your society and violence between states (or systems). Violence in your society is violence against children, women, miniorities etc. Here you can help in your society to change the situation (a little bit) with a social engagement. Also this kind of viollence is not tolerable.
Violence between states (or systems) mostly to enforce political interests, is what makes with great concern not only for me but also for my children and grandchildren and I hope and pray that this bare violence may come to an end. Although many say, that violence should not be a means of politics, this has taken a terrible order of magnitude. The seems to turn the world upside down. Praying and hope is this the right way? I dont know!
Dear Michael
I am talking about violence at all the levels. I have a feeling that once violence is resorted as a means to force others/society/government to toe the line at any level others start feeling maybe this way issues can be resolved.
The need for a dialogue, the need to sit down across the table and talk is something that is required but alas that is not happening.
There is violence in the house, in the society, between the governments and among the countries in the world.
That is not leaving a chance for the sanity and peace.

Vibha
I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Dear Yibha,
I am agree with you, but nevertheless it is important to distinguish between the types of violence, because there are some, which thinking only with violence can achieve noble goals (revolutionary theories). I meant something else: violence in your environment you can most directly influenced and contribute to the improvement. But there are also "external" violence, such as between states and groups or states are trying with violence to influence or to occupied other social or political systems. Any violence is bad and rude. Our world need peace.
Best regards
Michael Lersow
Violence does not resolve problems. Violence creates problems. No-violence is less harmonious than peace, but that could converge to this when there is good justice.
Media violence
There may be some correlation between violent behavior and particular media consumption practices, and in some instances, violent media might be a contributing factor to inspire particular violent actions, but such linkages are so much lower than other factors (like poverty, drug/alcohol use, patterns of physical & emotional abuse, and access to weapons) that suggestions to curb violence by changing media are simply an impractical, ineffectual distraction.

It’s basic human nature to be violent. Violence is never an effective way to solve problems. It would only aggravate the problem. Violence are major issues in society today. The roots of violence are many and require comprehensive strategies. Parents, schools and community can implement effective programs to combat violence. I have identified numerous factors that determine our behavior and whether a person is at risk for developing violent tendencies. These factors include biological traits, family bonding, individual characteristics, intelligence and education, child development, peer relationships, cultural shaping and resiliency.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
"Violence and arms can never resolve the problems of men."
------ Pope John Paul II
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
I do look at stopping violence from this angle:
"If you help disabled children, it's very appealing. If you help kids with cancer, those are the things you get credit for and those things are beautiful. But when it comes to stopping violence or really putting the time into rebuilding schools, that's just a different kind of project. It takes more than just money to do that."
----- Jim Brown
These days, we resort to violence for solution of any problem , simply because , we have developed a kind of intolerance to what is happening around us. We need to be more tolerant to judge any issue , rather than becoming impulsive and judgemental.
"Violence never solves anything." In this article, I aim to examine this contentious statement. On the surface it would seem true. People often resort to violence in order to settle a dispute, but victory does not always bring a real end to the problem. If we allow that the statement is true, we must admit that humans are foolish creatures because they continually think and act as if violence will resolve a problem. However, if the statement is false, we are faced with the idea that violence is a valid means to an end.

Incidents of violence happens there more where is chaos and lawlessness. Therefore, we move towards a system - a system devoted to common people - which is based on justice and equality.
Violence cannot resolved problems. Some political problems can be resolved by non-violent revolutions. A good example is the People Power Revolution in EDSA, Philippines 30 years ago.
Non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Violence is a disease, a disease that corrupts all who use it regardless of the cause. ~ Chris Hedges
"Violence" creates emotional (psychologic) and health problems, and it does not resolve anything that dialogue and peaceful conversation or learning or praying can do.
Dear Harsh Sir, if a person demands a justifiable demand and sits quietly and starves to death and he really dies ------- what do you call this ? Violence or Non Violence-----here there is a life loss---- pertaining to this I like to have your answer. Thanks
I believe that Gandhi’s views were the most enlightened of all the political men in our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence in fighting for our cause, but by non-participation in anything you believe is evil. ~ Albert Einstein
violence always cause violence, if not in the short term will be in long term.
Dear Vibha,
yesterday, I been in the city and saw this poster in large numbers. A good example for worldwide fight against violence?
Have a good day
Violence can be a misstep dragging 2 parties / multiple parties into indefinite vicious cycles of violence / revenge. If violence can't completely resolve a problem, we have to think alternatively how to find other way(s) to resolve the problem instead of repeating the same steps again & again in a greater magnitude.
Dear Michael
I think the world needs to unite and re-unite whenever required to deal with violence in the most effective manner.

The FIT Zones are just one of a new approach that use public health strategies to solve community problems. They tend to treat crime and violence like contagious diseases and look for innovative ways to prevent these "diseases" from spreading. Many involve partnerships between public health and public safety agencies and show promise in reducing and preventing crime and violence.

This topic brings me to that worst outcrop of herd life, the military system, which I abhor... This plague-spot of civilization ought to be abolished with all possible speed. Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism -- how passionately I hate them! ~ Albert Einstein
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
Violence should not be used to solve a problem. When people resort to violence, it means that they are mentally weak and seemingly have exhausted all other options to solve a problem with some one else. That leads to other bad decisions, so violence is sending the wrong message to people and does not solve anything.
The solution using violence is not a solution, but it will generate future problems!
I would like to add some new feature to this question.
We all people desire to go peacefully without hurting another. However, this is not true for all men and women. I think self-orientations and self-interests are the biggest issues that motivates individuals to hurt the other. Therefore to make changes in the attitude is essential if we desire to sustain non-violence on the earth.
I desire to know what we can do if violence is applied on us or another fellows.
Dear Prabhat
That is what troubles. some can stand up to the violence and fight but many cannot and are exploited for no reason.
I am also trying to find a solution to this problem.
Regards
Vibha
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
Violence never seems to be a solution to any problem. Violence usually makes more violence. War is not the answer to problems in countries. Non violent solutions would always be better. What a different world it would be if everyone committed to non-violence. Millions of dollars would be freed to help those in need. Lives would not be wasted. People would find the light of God in one another and work together to make a better world.
Violence and more violence only complicate the problem rather than solving it. World history can have various proofs.
Regards,
Mahamad Nabab Alam
Dear Mahamad
I fully agree with you. But why are we (people) not doing much about it and allowing violence to take over!
We need to learn from history and not allow it to repeat itself!

When we discuss about violence I think we have to give an answer to some question like:
Dear Vibha,
Actually, our leaders used to take advantage of violence to win there election. They used to divide the society on various ground and finally put the match on the highly flammable violence which immediate used to spread in different parts of the land as they become very effective transporters of violence as they are the actual planners.
We (society) must be very much aware of much political elements to prevent it.
Regards,
M.N.Alam
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
“An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
In the use of force, one simplifies the situation by assuming that the evil to be overcome is clear-cut, definite, and irreversible. Hence there remains but one thing: to eliminate it. Any dialogue with the sinner, any question of the irreversibility of his act, only means faltering and failure. Failure to eliminate evil is itself a defeat. Anything that even remotely risks such defeat is in itself capitulation to evil. The irreversibility of evil then reaches out to contaminate even the tolerant thought of the hesitant crusader who, momentarily, doubts the total evil of the enemy he is about to eliminate. ~ p. 21, Non-Violence (Gandhi)
it depends on the situation one will face... it's not an option for some local problems. But sometimes it is necessary to get rights.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
Violence is bad
Violence is never good. It will never be good. Violence only causes a vicious cycle. Two wrongs do not make a right. No matter what happens, do not use violence, violence will only make matters worse, not better. There are many better ways of sorting out things, rather than violence.
Two wrongs do not make it right. Sugar cannot dissolve sugar. Increasing the quantity of salt only makes the food taste worse and taking more snuffs of cocaine in order to be normal only makes one abnormal. Violence and more violence will only lead to viciousness and more viciousness.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,

Dear Dr. Vibha Sharma,
By poet: Sir Muhammad Allama Iqbal,
Religion does not teach us to bear ill-will among ourselves; We are of Hind, our homeland is Hindustan.'
Violence is not a solution of the problem. It dilutes the gravity of the serious problems and leads towards irresolution to the problems.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,

Non-violence confronts systematic injustice with active love, but refuses to retaliate with further violence under any circumstances. In order to halt the vicious cycles of violence, it requires a willing acceptance of suffering and death rather than inflicting suffering or death on anyone else. ~ John Dear
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hi
Violence is indeed bad. We all know that! But don't you all think we need to find a way out of the vicious cycles of violence that are engulfing the world over.

Vibha
Hello everyone,
Violence can not always resolve problems created by violence but, sometimes it does. Great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi has proved that big problem can be successfully dealt with nonviolence(ahimsa). But in order to eradicate terrorism, we have to pick up the gun. They can't be dealt with nonviolence because the only language they understand is bullets.
Use truth as your anvil, nonviolence as your hammer and anything that does not stand the test when it is brought to the anvil of truth and hammered with nonviolence, reject it. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
I do not believe in violence for resolving problems because others can think that their problem is the initial violence and act against it. Prove with oneself the "medicine" which one put as solution could be a defense against the violent but not a resolution of the problem. The civilized justice does not apply violence in any case. But there is punishment for such acts of violence.
We can't eliminate the violence in the world - obviously, it is impossible. But we must reduce it to minimum level.
It is possible to divide the violence to relative "bad" and relative "good" or acceptable. Aggression and assault are bad violence - crime. But self-defense is an acceptable form of violence or "good" violence. The question about a border between them often is not evident.
Today we have an increasing of the international tension. The spirit of war are in the air. Terrorism, local wars, etc. It is a kind of insanity: we can build the spaceships, manipulate with single atoms, read the DNA, etc. At the same time, we have a lot of armed conflicts and even sometimes the politicians threat with the nuclear (!!!) weapon. We have the technics from 21 century and the mind from the Middle Ages :(
We are not the politicians, we are just scientists. What can we do? In my opinion, we can increase the education level around - write the popular articles, speak with our students, etc. The improvement of the environment near us is the way to improvement the whole world.
Best regards,
Denis
Each violence only generates additional problems.
More violence generates more problems.
Dear Colleagues
Denis said that we have technics form s 21 and the mind from the Middle Ages, I would like that we have the mind of the best in the Middle Ages. Then in the universities the students were taught to look forward for growing in the virtues and to combat their vicious, to master their passions and so to obtain freedom from sin. They taught the theory of Just War that limits the use of violence to legitime defense and always circumscribe the violence with the combatant armies avoiding represalias against the innocent civilians. Most of this things are not taught anymore in our universities. In the First World War there were still knights piloting the airplanes. So most of abated pilot did not fear that their enemies riddle their parachutes.
Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

I'd like to start my own thread of reflection on proper responses to the existence of the whole of society bending on oppression and dehumanization of a separate human group. I shall focus on the question, "How, in all seriousness, a theologian could decide to get involved in this assassination plan ?' Since I just re-discovered my old addition to a published Theological Graffiti:

Violence doesn't solve problems - premier
Mahikeng - Police officers should not use violence to solve their marital problems, North West Premier Thandi Modise said on Wednesday."Violence and firearms in particular have never been useful tools to settle domestic disputes and marital problems," she said after a policeman wounded his wife before killing himself.
"The tragic incident, which has left us in shock, raises the question as to why the precaution step to disarm the sergeant was not taken after his wife was granted a restraining court order," she said.
Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the 34-year-old sergeant's wife was on her way to the Koster police station to lay a charge of domestic violence against her husband when he stopped her.
"The suspect went to the victim's car and fired seven gunshots [at]... the wife," Ngubane said.
"The wife was hit in the body. The sergeant then turned the gun to himself. He shot himself... [in] the head and he died on the scene."
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital.

Violence could be seen as a proof of strong man. But violence is seen as a weak intelligence of a man too.
There is a kind of violence that may contribute to solve social problems. It is the violence against ourselves, against our disordered passions, against our weakness and cowardly, against your lack of compromise under an injustice. If we use violence against our unordered passions, we grow in the virtues and we avoid these passions astray and come to translate into violence against others. Then we will be free indeed.

Violence will make the situation worse. I believe that dialogue, negotiation and communication are more effective.
Absolutely, I agree.
The dialogue, negotiation and communication are the best solution with high efficiency without violence!
Violence is never the solution, using violence as a solution will only lead to problems later in the future, violence is inexcusable.

Dear Victor
Each of us, and our countries has a right to the necessary self defense. That means that we, as an organized community, need to be prepared for it. This should be the reason behind the existence of the security and defense forces.
The means of defense should be proportional and sufficient to neutralize the intended attack.
It should besides reprove and exclude any form of vengeance and always privilege the dialog and understanding as a form to resolve the differences between persons and communities.
Between Argentina and Chile, our countries, in 1978 we were on the verge of a terrible conflict that was impeded because of the effective mediation of the deceased pope Saint John Paul II. We are very much indebted to him and to his collaborator, cardinal Samoré, who coordinated the conversations between our militar governments.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
"People are still thinking of solving problems by violence and war, and that has to stop."
---- Yoko Ono
Dear Victor
Self defense is every ones right but I won't equate it with violence of the sort I am talking about. Self defense of the individual/women/child/old man ....... I am talking about violence in the name of self-defense as in the case of countries and violent groups is what I am referring here.
That needs to be solved. The question came to my mind seeing the images of violent activities around the world. Most of the answers here also abhor violence but still the world is witnessing bombings, killings and so on due to unavoidable reasons.
