I downloaded the template you linked and tried to make the in-line equation. I saw immediatly what were you talking about. Here are some steps you may follow and see if they work for you:

* Insert the equation (Insert > Object > Microsoft Equation Editor) as a new line.

* Once the equation is inserted, right click on the equation to display the menu, then Click on Format / Object Format. This should open a dialogue box.

* On the Object Format window click on the tab "Size" and go to the section "Scale". Make sure the option "Block aspect ratio" is checked. Here you can reduce the size of the equation. Try a 50% reduction or less.

* On the Object Format window, click on the tab "Design" and click on the option "Narrow". This is the third option (In line with thext / Square / Narrow / Behind text / In front of text).

* In the same tab (Design) but in the Horizontal alignment section click on "Other".

* Close the Object format window.

Now the format of your object has changed, it should not be apparent except for the fact that the equation text is smaller (50% smaller, or whatever other ration you chose). Click on the equation and drag it to the position in the text where you want it.

This should let you see the whole equation in line with the text. Please note that this will reduce your equation size in order to be full displayed inline with the text, but if your equation has a lot of parameters it may be a little difficult to read it.

If after following the above mentioned steps you still see your equation as a "cropped" image, try the following:

* Right click on the equation and open the Object format window.

* Click on the tab "Image" and modify the "Up / Top" and "Down / Bottom" parameters. The default option is 0, but you can set negative values. Try -0.5, then you can try smaller numbers (-1, -2...) until you're satisfied with the results.

* Close the object format window.

* Click and drag the equation to its place, as most probably after formating the equation will move to another part of the text.

Please, note that if you do this the box of the equation will be taller and can disrupt the above line text (and the line text lying under).

I hope this suggestions work for you. I tried them and they seem to work on your template. Just be careful with the size, don't make the equation too small.

Can you share the steps you're following to insert the equation? that way it will be more evident where the problem is. In the meantime and if you haven't tried it yet, use the following:

Insert > Object > Microsoft Equation Editor.

That will let you insert equations. If you're using the 2007 word version you'll find the "object" option in the "text" section of the menu "insert". Do not use the option "formula" in the section "symbol" of the "insert" menu as this won't work.

If you're still having problems, please, be more specific and tell us which exactly is the problem so we can offer any other suggestion.

Thanks Rodriguez Alonso for your response. I am using Microsoft Equation Editor and also tried this template opening in MS word 2007 and then using MathType there but the problem still exist when a Math symbol is inserted inline with the text in a paragraph, the symbol gets cropped from upper and lower portion.

And when i apply 'Equation Display' style from the Formatting toolbar for that math symbol the entire style of the current paragraph gets changed from 'para' style to the 'Equation Display' style.

GO to insert and use equation option in the tool bar.

@Rajesh K P The problem is with the above said template only otherwise everything runs smoothly in normal document and with templates of other journals. I have asked the question because i am facing problem particularly with this template.

@Sharad Purohit Have you worked with the above template and encountered this problem of inserting math symbol or equation within the text paragraph? I request you to just download that template and insert any mathtype or equation editor symbol within the text in a paragraph. You will find a cropped image. If you insert an equation or symbol in the new line it appears correctly but within the text it creates problem.

It is very simple, right click on the object, then click on 'format object', in the open dialog box, click on 'layout' tab and click on any of the wrapping style you want.

@Sharad Purohit i would not have asked this question if it seems to be so simple. Yes i do agree with you this is a simple step but for any normal document and templates other that the template which i am talking about. ( http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/bioinformatics/for_authors/word-template.zip ). You just download it from this link and then try all the simple steps on it dear inserting simple math symbol from equation editor or math type within any text paragraph(not in new line).

Thanks Rodriguez Alonso for the concern and the solution. At my side on the Format Object window, there is "Layout" tab instead of "Design" and there is "Tight" option instead of "Narrow".

One more thing i did is Horizontal alignment -> other->Advanced->Text wrapping ->Distance from the text ->left=0.1cm,right=0.1cm. And finally press Ctrl key while moving the object to smoothly align the object within the text.

Yeah, sorry about the messed up tab names. I use MS Word in spanish and did a literal translation to english, I should have said that, sorry.

yes Gurpreet you are right, my suggestion was not as elaborate as Rodriguez, but it was to point you in that direction.

@Sharad Purohit Its OK. It is bit boring to insert preliminary Math symbols within the text in a paragraph. Even after following all these steps when you wanna write more text before these Math symbols, you would have to manually re-position them at the desired place within a text. Because the following option also does not work with it.

Format Object ->Advanced...->Picture Position-> Options->Move Object with text (Checked)

In word 2007 there is insert option for equation. you can insert equation between text using this option, there is so many template, you can also generate and insert your own equation.

This problem has motivated me to learn and switch to Latex for compiling all research articles.

You probably have already solved this by now by one way or another, but I will leave my solution here for future Google searchers who stumble upon this discussion. I have just caught myself with exactly the same problem working on the same template for Bioinformatics.

My workaround is very similar to that presented by Gustavo: I inserted a Microsoft Equation 3.0 object (the old MS equation editor, instead of that of Office 2007...) and manipulated its text-wrapping layout by right-clicking on it (I chose "upper and lower" or "superior e inferior" depending on your language). the equation then became fully displayed as we wanted it right from the beginning. Apparently there is no way of changing the text-wrapping style of equations using MS Office 2007 equation editor, at least not with this template...

Use Latex to format your papers is the easy answer! It does the typesetting not
