Since Bachmann, Kennaway and Kennaway published in 1938 in the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine (The Journal had no Impact Factor but considerable Impact) an article about "The Rapid Production of Tumours by Two New Hydrocarbons", we know that PAHs are more carcinogenic when methyl groups are involved.
Since this time 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (7,12-DMBA) und 7,8,12-Trimethylbenzo(a)anthracene (7,8,12-TMBA) are considered amongst the strongest carcinogenic substances, known.
Can any better Chemist than myself explain, why methyl groups have this strong impact?
Thank you and kind regards
