I am using 1KDa CE dialysis membrane for dialysis of carbon quantum dots. During dialysis, I noticed that the membrane is expanding. I want to know whether one can reuse the membrane for one more dialysis or not. If it is possible how much time one can reuse it?
I've never tried to reuse dialysis membranes, but I don't know of any reason why it couldn't be done, in principle. In practice, things to worry about include fouling of the membrane pores so that the membrane loses porosity, bacterial contamination, and holes or cracks allowing leakage.
Reuse od hemodialyzer used to be a common practice in EU and is still practiced in the US. One can measure residual volume to assess the amount of clotted/patent capilaries or employ a special dialyzer reuse machine (see Google) to get insight into porosity, integrity etc.
