I've been reading some recommendations on how to eliminate protozoans and other contaminants in microalgae cultures. One suggestion that has caught my attention is the use of Carbon dioxide in the culture, which as far as i know will decrease the pH level in the water, for it is safe for the cultures too. The problem is, i have read some articles that says protozoans are more abundant at lower pH levels.

Hi, Marco, the question is not so simple. Long time ago I did some experiments with a culturing of protists and microinvertebrates on cabbage. This solution is acidic but perfect for the development of ciliates. The problem is that descending of pH will simply change a spectrum of species and type of microcommunity. More profitable will be cooling in ref under light. Photosynthetic activity will exist but feeding will be in minimum. If fast and several changes of temperature you can free the culture for microalgae...
