Can I differentiate BM hMSC into chondrocytes in 2D (not in pellets).?

Is it possible? will cells aggregate by themselves after a few weeks in differentiation media?, I want to know if my bioactive material enhances differentiation.. but my bioactive surface is a modified film where cells adhere and interact... so I cant do the differentiation by pellets if I want to see the effect of my surface on it...

Also how can I quantify the sGAG production of my cells at different timepoints if they are adhered to the bioactive surface wich CONTAINS A GAG covalently grafted in its surface
