Dear researchers,
Ethyl lactate is a green solvent which can be replaced by toxic solvents such as DMAc, DMF, NMP, etc. But there are only a few reports for CA/Ethyl lactate. It seems this solvent only can dissolve cellulose acetate polymer.
Can this solvent dissolve PSF, PES or PPSU polymers?

polysulfone family polymers are soluble in dimethylformamide (DMF) dichloromethane and N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP)
Among the heteropoly acid catalysts, molybdophosphoric acid (PMo) is chosen as the solid acid catalyst because of its high acidity and to prove the activity on the Lactic acid esterification reactions and DMF is the common suitable polar solvent for both PSF and PMo.

I would suggest taking a look at the Hansen or Hildebrandt solubility parameters of the polymer and the solvent. If the total solubility parameters of the polymer and the solvent are close to each other, then most probably, the polymer is soluble in the solvent.

The polysulfone polymers are soluble in chloroform, dimethylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and dimethyl sulfoxyde (DMSO). But NMP seems to be the best optimum from chemical, economic and environmental.

Thank you so much for sharing your information. However, I am looking for a green solvent to fabricate green membranes. As I mentioned above, these solvents you introduced are the best (powerful for dissolving polymer chains in a proper way) solvents but TOXIC solvents.

Ethyl-lactate is an environmentally friendly compound and it can be used to dissolve the polysulfones .
Hildebrandt solubility parameter of ethyl lactate = 21.3 MPa1/2
Hildebrandt solubility parameter of PES = 22.9 MPa1/2
Hildebrandt solubility parameter of PSF = 19.9 MPa1/2
