of course you may use in-situ X-ray diffraction at high temperature. If you do such an experiment on a laboratory diffractometer, a careful adjustment of the sample within the beam is required, because shifts of the position of the sample induced by the heating (elongation perpendicular to the surface) may lead to shifts in Bragg-peak angles, that may lead to misinterpretations.
I personally would recommend the use of a parallel beam, which minimizes those effects. And I would go for a Grazing incidence asymmetric reflection geometry, because this way the choice of the incidence angle allows to define the penetration depth of the x-rays, and thus some meaningful information about the depth of your solid diffusion coating may be obtained.
