The most widely applied models in assessing the adhesion of microorganisms are Caco-2 and HT-29 cells. There is also a Caco2-bbe1 cell line which was cloned from the Caco-2 cell line. Caco2-bbe1 can be grown as polarized cells and when grown in transwells offer both apical and basolateral surfaces (more comparable to the human colon).
