Hi jyoti, the best method for transesterification depend on the Acid value. If the Acid value is low a transesterification with sodium hydroxide as a catalyst is enough. If the Acid value is high you require two different reaction steps, a first reaction step using sulfuric acid as a catalyst in order to reduce the Acid value and a second reaction step with sodium hydroxide.
Dear Mario Andres Noriega sir what if I donot know the acid value? I have used acid catalysed single step transesterification process but am unable to seperate the oil layer.
Dear Jyoti, it is possible that you are unable to separate the oil because the reaction did not achieve the maximum conversion, the acid reaction needs more time than the alkali reaction, so, a good idea is to increase your reaction time and temperature. Again, I encourage you, to evaluate the acid value, it is an easy technique an improve your results explanation. Good Luck.
