I am counting emulsion droplets using flow cytometry and I have noticed that the final volumetric count of the particles depends heavily on the speed. A higher flow rate results in a higher final count. Does anybody have any ideas as to the cause of this phenomena?

EDIT - Update, wow, a lot of very detailed replies, thanks a lot to everyone. I have played with the settings a bit more and it seems that at higher speeds the difference in count is much less. For now we are attributing this effect to the creaming of the emulsion- lower speeds take longer to aspirate, allowing droplets to float up and accumulate at the top of the sample.
