For image analysis in some applications could be an option, http://gwyddion.net/ or imageJ, these two are open source and multiplatform. could you check the features of each one.

I recommend also this software: http://www.adcis.net/en/Image-Processing-And-Analysis-Software-And-Custom-Engineering-Developments.html It's also not for free bu it's worth the prize.

AcDsee or Fiji software can be useful for your image analysis.

I use ImageJ and I think that is a very good and user-friendly software.

Fiji is just ImageJ with specific plugins (for biologists)

Just google Fiji, this is an enhanced version of ImageJ. I have used this and found more useful than ImageJ. Perhaps there is also separate tutorial for this.
