Glucose is a vital energy precursor for fetuses. My experimental data showed that the glucose concentration in the umbilical vein is 0.3 mM greater than in umbilical artery when a piglet was born (samples were take before the umbilical cord breaks); however, I did observed that some fetal umbilical venous-arterial glucose differences were close to zero or even negative, does it indicate an increased glucose production from the fetus; eg: via upregulated gluconeogenesis? What are the possible explainations to the diminished or reversed umbilical venous-arterial glucose difference? Thank you.
